For those in need of some space travel after the holiday break, the Epic Games Store has the answer for you. Subset Games’ 2012 hit FTL is now available for free on Epic’s storefront. A roguelike space travel game where the goal is to escape an oncoming fleet of aliens, it’s an absolute classic that anyone with an interest in Star Trek should try. Just imagine Kirk trying to get out of these scenarios.

The version on offer is the “Advanced Edition” update, which released in 2013. A free update that added an extra alien race, new ships, more planets, and some drones, it’s the definitive way to experience FTL. Don’t let the intense difficulty dissuade you from giving FTL a shot. The game does have an easy option, but you’ll eventually click with its idiosyncrasies and be piloting to freedom in no time…after 500 restarts.

FTL will be free until tomorrow, December 28, at 11:00 am EST/8:00 am PST. You should act now if anything about the game looks intriguing to you. It really is an all-time indie classic that most gamers will get a kick out of.

As for what tomorrow will bring, it seems Epic will be repeating another freebie from earlier in the year. The image above looks suspiciously like Hyper Light Drifter. That title was previously free with Mutant Year Zero back in August, which means the 12 free games thing was likely “12 new free games.” This would explain how Epic will be extending this latest campaign until 2020 rolls around.

It would be pretty interesting if Epic gave out some of its back catalog of games. Getting Unreal Tournament for free would be awesome. It’s one of the best multiplayer FPS titles ever made, after all. Epic still owns the copyright and despite abandoning the fourth entry, fans are still clamoring for more arena FPS titles.

Regardless, we only have five days left in the year. Since FTL marks the eighth giveaway (if we’re counting Celeste’s repeat as another), that means only four more titles are up. It’s anyone’s guess as to what else Epic will be offering.
