Xbox One sales momentum which began with price cuts of old hardware and continued with the launch of the more attractive Xbox One S has enabled the system to record a third successive monthly sales win over the PS4 in the US, according to NPD data.

Some had anticipated a return to the top for PS4 thanks to the launch of the slimmer model in mid September, but this wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

Microsoft added in a statement to GamesBeat that the Xbox One was also the best-selling console in the UK during September.

“In addition, Xbox One was the only gen eight console to see year-over-year growth in September in the US, Australia, the UK, and many other countries worldwide,” added MS in the statement. “This success was driven by our fans and their support for Xbox One S, which is the only console available this holiday with built-in UHD 4K Blu-ray, 4K video streaming and HDR for gaming and video. We received an incredible response to Forza Horizon 3, the No. 1 first-party title for September in the US, Australia, and UK according to NPD Group and GfK Entertainment UK.”

Microsoft continued: “With the blockbuster launch of Gears of War 4 for Xbox One and Windows 10 this week and the upcoming release of Clubs and Looking for Group on Xbox Live alongside the launches of Dead Rising 4, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dishonored 2, Final Fantasy XV, Titanfall 2, and Watch Dogs 2 in the coming months, Xbox is the best place to game this holiday.”

Whilst a three month streak for Xbox One is certainly a step in the right direction, so strong are console sales during the Holiday shopping season that PS4 could wipe out any gains by the Xbox One in a single month – which is certainly a possibility with the launch of PS VR and next month’s arrival of PS4 Pro.

We can’t really begin to class the Xbox One as a true comeback kid until numbers for the final three months of 2016 are taken into account.
