UPDATE: Nintendo has allegedly denied Eurogamer’s report, telling Japanese site IT Media that “there is no change to our continuing [Wii U] production”.

As translated by Kotaku, a spokesperson for Nintendo explained that claims the console is to be discontinued this week are “not true”, adding: “Even though the Nintendo Switch is slated to go on sale, [Wii U] production is scheduled to continue.”

Wii U’s successor Nintendo Switch goes on sale in March 2017.

ORIGINAL STORY: Nintendo is to halt Wii U production this week, Eurogamer reports.

The final consoles will roll off the production line this Friday, the site claims, with the deadline for final orders supposedly having passed yesterday. Sales of the console currently stand at 13.36m units, significantly fewer than the 101.63m Wiis sold, and less than half the amount of N64s.

Up until now, Nintendo’s worst performing home console had been the Nintendo GameCube, which achieved lifetime sales of 21.74m units.

Wii U launched in November 2012, although it’s set to be succeeded by next year’s Nintendo Switch, a revolutionary new console that lets players take their home console games on the go. Switch is due to go on sale in March 2017, although Nintendo has yet to formally confirm when production of Wii U will come to an end.

Still, if you really, really want one, you’re probably best heading down to the shop soon before they’re finally gone for good.
