Nintendo will be hosting a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online tournament this month with a chance to win some My Nintendo Gold coins. Essentially free cash that users accrue for purchasing things on the eShop, the top eight players from this month’s tournament will be given 2,500 gold coins to spend however they see fit. Hey, they can even put it towards another year of Switch Online. The tournament will be held between January 17 and 19....

Microsoft has been hyping up the release of its brand new Windows 11 operating system for the last few weeks. Its global launch has been set for October 5, which has already come in some time zones. Thus, copies of the new operating system have already begun distribution, meaning that even if you live somewhere like North America where it’s still October 4 (as of the time of publication), you can already download Windows 11 and fire it up early....

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red has described the upcoming remake of the series’ first game as a “story-driven, single-player open-world RPG - a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher”. It’s the first detailed description we’ve had of the remake, and suggests a more from-the-ground-up reworking of the original role-player than previously thought. Thanks to the success of The Witcher 3, the series is now thought of as a fully open-world franchise....

Yesterday’s mandatory Xbox 360 dashboard update was billed as re-enabling the Boot to Disc option for the console, but reports on popular modding forums indicate Microsoft included something a little extra in its battle against software pirates. The update has blocked the use of flashed firmware disc drive modifications – pirates flash their console’s disc drive in order to bypass Microsoft’s game security checks. Hundreds of posts on modding forums indicate that copied games including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo: Reach no longer load....

Xboss boss Phil Spencer has hinted that the upcoming Project Scarlett could be a single console, rather than two, which has been rumoured. In an interview with Business Insider, Spencer said, ‘Last year we said consoles, and we’ve shipped a console and we’ve now detailed another console. I think that’s plural.’ Spencer is referring to his E3 2018 briefing, in which he revealed that Microsoft was working on multiple new consoles....

There’s nothing like waking up and seeing gameplay from an unfinished Star Wars game. Admittedly, I haven’t played the most recent Battlefront 2. However, I will say that I did play some of the beta and enjoyed what Tie fighter gameplay was present. The gameplay below is from an unfinished Star Wars title that was pitched sometime in 2016 from developer, Double Damage. Although the game was pitched, there was no response from EA to move forward on the project....

Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, revealed via an interview with MCVUK that the Xbox Series X will not feature any true first-party exclusives for the first couple of years. “As our content comes out over the next year, two years, all of our games, sort of like PC, will play up and down that family of devices,” Booty says. “We want to make sure that if someone invests in Xbox between now and [Series X] that they feel that they made a good investment and that we’re committed to them with content....

Today Izanagi Game and NIS America announced a delay for the upcoming escape game/bullet hell shoot ’em up hybrid Yurukill: The Calumniation Games. The western release date has been shifted to July 5, 2022, for North America, and July 8, 2022, for Europe and Australia. Originally it was on June 7 and June 10 respectively. The same happened for Japan, with the release date delayed to May 26 from April 14....

Wii U horror Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water will include bonus costumes that allow players to dress up as Princess Zelda and Zero Suit Samus. The two new outfits can be seen in a brand new trailer released by Nintendo over the weekend (above), although it isn’t yet clear how players will be able to unlock them. Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is the next entry in the cult classic horror series that sees players using the Wii U GamePad to control a camera capable of seeing spirits and clues invisible to the naked eye....

Phil Spencer has been speaking on the possibility of Xbox continuing with the Killer Instinct beat-em-up series. Talking on the latest episode of the Dropped Frames podcast (spotted by Video Games Chronicle) Spencer spoke on the series that we’ve not seen much from since its relaunch with the Xbox One. He said “The response when we redid KI at the launch of Xbox One was fantastic.” Spencer said he’d spoken “many times” with Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty about the series....
